[NEWS UPDATE] – VK9XGM will be running two separate stations. How we divide our activity between CW, SSB and FT4/8 will depend on a number of factors including conditions, QSO balances and operator fatigue! We both enjoy working SSB and CW pile ups. We are certainly hoping we get plenty of those. Neither of us are especially keen on Digital modes but we recognise the desire of a proportion of the Ham community for QSOs on FT4/8. We also understand the power of these modes in weak signal situations.
Looking at the predicted propagation in November 2023, and having experience of operating from this part of the world, we know that Europe and Asia are relatively easy from VK9X. We also anticipate (hope!) that HF conditions will be very good, judging by how SC25 is progressing.
The real challenge from VK9X are QSOs with the Americas. We will pay attention to predictions for both short and long path openings to these regions and hope that more than a few ATNOs are provided. We anticipate a good take off short path to North America. Long path might be a little harder. For South America, it looks like short path which for some guys like LU and especially CE will be challenging – our take off will not, we believe, be blocked but is poorer as signals have to cross the island, over higher ground. We hope good propagation will offset some of the path loss.
When there is an opening to NA/SA, we will prioritize those areas over AS and EU. We will ask callers to QRX and make selective CQ to NA/SA etc. We urge those not in the Americas to respect their fellow hams struggling to get through and not call when we are looking for NA/SA. The potential openings look relatively short lived. When appropriate we might make selective calls for EU, depending on which band is in use – there should be plenty of time for Europe, Asia and Africa.
We will also do our best to spend time on the low bands. These may or may not be productive, given the state and stage of SC25. Of course, there will be great need especially on 160m. We will have to take things as they come – nothing we can do if there is no propagation. It is likely we will target SR and/or SS times in particular parts of the world. We also hope we can have a reasonable internet access so that we can keep folks informed in real time.
As our thinking and plans on this develop, we will post more info here. It is likely that during the expedition we will have a better idea of what is best. We will try to communicate our plans as best we can. We will develop some thoughts about FT8 in the coming weeks.
Finally, Chris and Keith have done this type of DXpedition before. This will be #9. We know what is involved. We know it is impossible to keep everyone happy, and some of you won’t be happy because we are on the wrong mode or the wrong band, as you see it. Please be patient and keep
trying. We want to work as many folks on as many bands as possible. We will be QRV as much as we can. But please also remember, there are only two of us, we both need to sleep some and we
need to eat from time to time, and sometimes the latter is at a time NOT in our control. And we don’t know the precise situation until we get there, especially regarding local QRM – there

[MAY 6] – Chris, GM3WOJ and Keith, GM4YXI (both previously A35V, V6Z, VK9CZ, ZK2V) will be active from Christmas Island as VK9XGM during November 21 to December 5, 2023. Two stations active on SSB/CW. Also one station active on FT8 or FT4. Multi-two entry in the CQWW CW Contest 2023.
[MISE À JOUR DES NOUVELLES ] – VK9XGM exploitera deux stations distinctes. La répartition de notre activité entre CW, SSB et FT4/8 dépendra d’un certain nombre de facteurs, notamment les conditions, les équilibres QSO et la fatigue de l’opérateur ! Nous aimons tous les deux travailler les empilements SSB et CW. Nous espérons certainement en avoir beaucoup. Aucun de nous n’aime particulièrement les modes numériques, mais nous reconnaissons le désir d’une partie de la communauté amateur pour les QSO sur FT4/8. Nous comprenons également la puissance de ces modes dans des situations de signal faible.
En examinant la propagation prévue en novembre 2023 et en ayant l’expérience de l’exploitation de cette partie du monde, nous savons que l’Europe et l’Asie sont relativement faciles à partir de VK9X. Nous prévoyons également (espérons !) que les conditions HF seront très bonnes, à en juger par la progression de SC25.
Le vrai défi de VK9X sont des QSO avec les Amériques. Nous prêterons attention aux prédictions pour les ouvertures de trajets courts et longs vers ces régions et espérons que plus que quelques ATNO seront fournis. Nous prévoyons un bon décollage court chemin vers l’Amérique du Nord. Le long chemin pourrait être un peu plus difficile. Pour l’Amérique du Sud, cela ressemble à un chemin court qui pour certains gars comme LU et surtout CE sera difficile – notre décollage ne sera pas, selon nous, bloqué mais est plus pauvre car les signaux doivent traverser l’île, sur un terrain plus élevé. Nous espérons qu’une bonne propagation compensera une partie de la perte de chemin.
Lorsqu’il y aura une ouverture vers NA/SA, nous donner la priorité à ces domaines sur l’AS et l’UE. Nous demanderons aux appelants de QRX et ferons un CQ sélectif à NA/SA, etc. Les ouvertures potentielles semblent relativement de courte durée. Le cas échéant, nous pouvons faire des appels sélectifs vers l’UE, en fonction de la bande utilisée – il devrait y avoir beaucoup de temps pour l’Europe, l’Asie et l’Afrique.
Nous ferons également de notre mieux pour passer du temps sur les bandes basses. Celles-ci peuvent ou non être productives, compte tenu de l’état et du stade de SC25. Bien sûr, il y aura grand besoin surtout sur 160m. Nous devrons prendre les choses comme elles viennent – nous ne pouvons rien faire s’il n’y a pas de propagation. Il est probable que nous ciblerons les temps SR et/ou SS dans certaines parties du monde. Nous espérons également pouvoir disposer d’un accès Internet raisonnable afin de pouvoir tenir les gens informés en temps réel.
Comme notre réflexion et nos plans sur ce développement, nous publierons plus d’informations ici. Il est probable qu’au cours de l’expédition nous aurons une meilleure idée de ce qu’il y a de mieux. Nous essaierons de communiquer nos plans du mieux que nous pourrons. Nous développerons quelques réflexions sur FT8 dans les semaines à venir.
Enfin, Chris et Keith ont déjà fait ce type de DXpedition . Ce sera le #9. Nous savons de quoi il s’agit. Nous savons qu’il est impossible de satisfaire tout le monde, et certains d’entre vous ne le seront pas parce que nous sommes sur le mauvais mode ou sur le mauvais groupe, comme vous le voyez. S’il vous plaît soyez patient et continuez d’essayer. Nous voulons faire travailler autant de personnes sur autant de groupes que possible. Nous serons QRV autant que possible. Mais s’il vous plaît rappelez-vous aussi, nous ne sommes que deux, nous avons tous les deux besoin de dormir un peu et nous avons besoin de manger de temps en temps, et parfois ce dernier n’est PAS sous notre contrôle. Et nous ne connaissons pas la situation précise jusqu’à ce que nous y arrivions, en particulier en ce qui concerne le QRM local – il y a beaucoup de panneaux solaires sur les bâtiments à proximité (Google Earth).
