NEWS UPDATE – Thankfully Erik is safe and well, however it’s been reported in Norwegian media that two people sadly lost their lives on Jan Mayen yesterday.
A woman in her 50s from Vestland and a man in his 30s from Nordland lost their lives in an avalanche on Jan Mayen on Saturday. Both were civilian employees in the Armed Forces.

Giorgio IU5HWS, owner of YI9WS licence, is still operating from the base camp located some 40 miles away from Baghdad, Iraq until March when he will return back home after having been part of the Italian military peacekeeping mission as a paratrooper of the Italian airborne Folgore.
Giorgio, after thousands of QSO’s with Europe and Russia, is now mainly working DX stations outside Europe in need of Iraq as a “new one” for DXCC. It is kindly requested to avoid duplicating QSO’s and to respect Giorgio’s selective call areas without getting impatient making QRM.
He is still active daily in his spare time, sometimes being forced to interrupt his radio activity according to the sudden demands of his military mission.
The scheduled time, which may vary due to service needs, and his favourite frequencies are:

I would like to give some updates on behalf of Giorgio, IU5HWS operating from Iraq. Giorgio is still active and the good news is he received his official license – finally – from local authorities. Look for him starting today November 25th as YI9WS. Let me underline few points:- all the previous QSOs made as YI9/IU5HWS will be confirmed via mail. I’m working with Giorgio to apply for a YI9WS account on LoTW. So all QSOs made starting today will be confirmed this way also. Remember, Giorgio is there on duty. Activity will be on regular basis but always in his spare time. Please follow what Giorgio asks for, especially when he try to call “outside EU”. For special needs and skeds, stations outside EU can ask and send an e-mail to me, IK5SRF at my QRZ.com web page: we’re focused to help stations that needs YI. SEPTEMBER 10, 2020 – Giorgio got back in touch with DX-World to say that he is having a lot of success operating. Meanwhile, he wanted to point out that about 3-4 months ago he applied for a radio license but never received any word from the Iraqi MoC. He will continue using YI/IU5HWS and hopes soon his license application is approved to dispel rumours of “fake activation”. A QSL card (preview soon) is prepared. Giorgio will also send some pictures of his activity.
JULY 1, 2020 – Giorgio IU5HWS informs DX-World that he will again be in Iraq (60km from Baghdad) during July 30 to November 30, 2020. He’s going there with the Italian Army Airborne Brigade. QRV on 40-20-10m. Giorgio will update his YI/IU5HWS page on QRZ.com with more details later.

Not much news yet, but team members of the Hellenic Amateur Radio Association apparently plan activity from Mellish Reef and Willis Island later this year. Month of October is mentioned. We’ll update when firm info comes to hand.

Although not active since last October, Elham 5A0YL has recently updated her QRZ page with some info:
I apologize for the delay in sending QSL cards out lately. Because of the never ending conflict in Libya, restrictions because of COVID-19, no flights and post between 5A and most countries. Additionally, more than 20 hours daily without electricity makes life here really hard.
Despite all these circumstances, I will be on the air when there is electricity in my area. I am new into amateur radio and looking forward to learning more about the magic of our hobby. Thanks go to Abubaker, 5A1AL who introduced me into amateur radio, he spends a lot of time to teach me and help me get my license.

SEPTEMBER 22, 2020 – Team MS0INT has today been granted permission to land on the Bass Rock (EU-123) and to undertake an IOTA DXpedition from there. Firm dates and full details to be announced, but likely early next year (February, March or April) before any activity. The Bass Rock has only ever been activated three times (1997, 2001, 2008) according to research. The team is indebted to Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Sir Hew Dalrymple, for allowing them to land on his island.

Oleg ZS1ANF is on his way to Wolf´s Fang Runway MNB-12 on the Antarctic inland ice and possibly will be active as ZS7ANT in this Antarctic summer season at beginning of Febr.. Probably he will be operating from Whichaway Camp WAP MNB-11 too.
The German research icebreaker Polarstern DP0POL/mm did arrive at the shelf ice coast north of the Neumayer 3 base at Jan.18, 2021. Soon we can expect the hear DP0GVN and DP1POL from that location.

Seba, VP8/SQ1SGB is currently working as an electronician at Halley 6(a) Base on the Brunt Ice Shelf. He will try to operate mostly on 40m between 23,00 and 00,00 UTC in SSB or FT8. Check 7180-7195 SSB, 7073-7075 FT8. He will stay there until Feb.4, 2021 only. QSL via EB7DX. VP8DOI is busy on the field and it’s hard for him to be on air.
The Belgrano II Base in Antarctica (LU1ZG and LU3HRS/Z) is still active in this antarctic summer season 2020/2021. The are QRV mainly on 20m FT8-FT4-JT65 when time permits. IOTA reference is AN-011 (Ross Island). QSL via LU4DXU or LU4AA or LOTW. QSL from LU4AA will be delivered only twice a year

A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Southern Ocean near Antarctica on Saturday, prompting a tsunami alert for areas which are virtually uninhabited, officials say. Small tsunami waves were reported but serious damage or injuries are not expected.
The earthquake happened at 8:37 p.m. Chilean time on Saturday and struck about 55 kilometers (34 miles) south of Elephant, a mountainous and ice-covered island in the outer reaches of the South Shetland Islands.
The nearby Chilean base Eduardo Frei (WAP CHL-Ø5), has been put on evacuation alert due to tsunami risk.

Un fort tremblement de terre de magnitude 6,9 a frappé samedi l’océan Austral près de l’Antarctique, déclenchant une alerte au tsunami pour les zones qui sont pratiquement inhabitées, selon des responsables. Petit tsunami
des vagues ont été signalées, mais des dommages ou blessures graves ne sont pas attendus.
Le tremblement de terre s’est produit à 20 h 37. Heure chilienne samedi et a frappé à environ 55 kilomètres (34 miles) au sud de Elephant, une île montagneuse et couverte de glace dans les confins de
les îles Shetland du Sud.
