[NEWS UPDATE] – With the team set to depart for Rockall on Friday (26th), many DXers and IOTA chasers, not to mention the MM0UKI operators, are now keeping a keen eye on
weather forecasts and charts. Early indications suggest high pressure is never far away from Rockall. Equally, Atlantic weather fronts never seem far away too. Fingers firmly crossed.

The Bulgarian Polar Research Vessel “Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodiy (RSV-421)” is owned by a consortium consisting of the Naval Academy, the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia and the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute. The Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii was ceremoniously christened and commissioned into the Bulgarian Navy inventory on July 27, 2021.
Before the ship’s first polar mission, it was repaired, modernised and refitted in Varna. On December 27, 2022, RSV 421 set sail from Varna Marine Station, marking the beginning of the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition to the Bulgarian Polar Base on Livingston Island, part of the South Shetland Islands. The ship was loaded with building materials and equipment needed for the construction of a laboratory as part of the Bulgarian Base.
After a 127-day voyage to the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island and back, the first Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) returned home, docking Tuesday May 2nd 2023 at the Varna Marine Station.
In the way back home, the Bulgarian naval Research Vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) crossed the Ionian Sea along its southern boundary with the Mediterranean, sailing eastwards, in the evening hours of April 23, 2023.
Now the Polar ship is docked at Bulgarian port city of Varna (on the Black Sea) after fully completing its participation in the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition to Livingston Island, Antarctica
With the sailing of the first military Research Vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) to Antarctica, Bulgaria has proven itself to be a Maritime and Polar Nation, said Prof. Hristo Pimpirev last Tuesday, May 2nd, in Varna, when at the local Marine Station he did wait to meet the returning RSV 421 which docked at 10 a.m. After the ship docks, scientists will take the samples collected during the expedition and start examining them.

Le navire de recherche polaire bulgare ‘Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodiy (RSV-421)’ appartient à un consortium composé de l’Académie navale, de l’Université St Kliment Ohridski de Sofia et l’Institut bulgare de l’Antarctique. Le Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii a été cérémonieusement baptisé et mis en service dans l’inventaire de la marine bulgare le 27 juillet 2021.
Avant la première mission polaire du navire, il a été réparé, modernisé et réaménagé à Varna. Le 27 décembre 2022, le RSV 421 a appareillé de la station marine de Varna, marquant le début de la 31e expédition antarctique bulgare vers la base polaire bulgare sur l’île Livingston, partie des îles Shetland du Sud. [NEWS UPDATE] – Unfortunately, we have some really sad news to report. Ben DL6RAI has become SK
after a tower gave way while he was carrying out repairs at the P49V contest station. Jacobo, P43P writes:
Ben was working on the tower at the house in Aruba. They were busy replacing towers. At a certain moment the tower buckled and Ben, who was
attached with a safety belt, was left hanging in the air. They cut the cables and brought him to the ground and performed CPR. Police and ambulance were called out but in vain. A doctor
pronounced Ben SK shortly afterwards. May Ben P4/DL6RAI Rest in Peace.
[MAY 17] – Martin, DL5RMH and Ben, DL6RAI are staying in Aruba for maintenance of the P49V QTH from 13th to 29th of May, 2023. They operate in
CW and FT8 during their stay and plan to participate in the WPX CW contest. Their callsign is P44X. QSL via LoTW or bureau / direct via DJ4MX.

Jamie M0SDV and Philipp DK6SP will lead a team of young and enthusiastic operators on an exciting 10-day DXpedition in Guyana 8R (Callsign TBD). The team will consist of four members, including their close friends Sven DJ4MX and Tomi HA8RT, who share their passion for amateur radio and DXing. The DXpedition will take place between 14th February 2024 and 24th February 2024, during which the team will cover a wide range of bands from 160m to 6m, including WARC bands. However, they will not be operating on 60m due to licensing restrictions.
To ensure an effective operation, the team will be using a variety of wire antennas and high power to transmit signals in CW, SSB, FT8, and RTTY modes. This will allow them to reach
as many stations as possible and make the most of their time in Guyana.
For QSL management, the team has enlisted the services of Charles Wilmott M0OXO, who will handle all QSL requests through his OQRS system. Upon working the team, operators can expect to receive an LOTW confirmation immediately after the DXpedition has concluded, or even throughout the course of the Dxpedition depending on internet access. The team is dedicated to providing seamless QSL experience and will make every effort to ensure that all contacts are confirmed in a timely manner.
The team is overwhelmed with gratitude for their sponsors, whose unwavering support has made this DXpedition possible. The team recognizes that without the generosity and backing of these sponsors, this adventure would not have been possible. The sponsors have provided crucial resources, including financial support, technical assistance, and equipment, which have enabled the team to embark on this exciting journey. It’s happening: Swains 2023 is on! Although it was silent for quite some time, we were still working on the project and are happy that we can now announce that the contract with Alex Jennings is in our hands. Alex Jennings is the proprietor of Swains Island and providing the logistic support for the DXpedition.
The DXpedition to Swains Island will take place in the autumn of 2023. The governmental ship Manu’atela is booked for our trip.
We will arrive on Swains Island the 4th of October and will depart the 17th of October 2023.
Four new members are in our team because some couldn’t join due circumstances. The team still consist of 10 international operators. The operators are: DJ9RR (Heye), DL2AMD (Rainer), DL6JGN (Hans), KO8SCA (Adrian), NG7M (Max), PA2KW (Evert), PA3EWP (Ronald), PA4WM (Martin), PA5X (Johannes) and PG5M (Gerben).
Due to Covid and the global economic situation, our costs have increased considerably compared to 2020. The total cost has reached 125,000 euros, so we ask you to consider increasing your donation as well whenever possible!
In the meantime, we have been working on another antenna setup, focusing on the higher bands. We are preparing VDA’s for 10, 12, 15, 17 and 20 meters. We will have 2 additional radio’s active. With 6 stations running we can make more QSO’s and give more DXers an All Time New One.
Our camps are separated by approx. 500 meters, which will allow us to operate on some bands with 2 stations simultaneously.
